Know how to get a safer, cheaper flight with these insider secrets! Although there are many tips and tricks that airlines share, some secrets still hide thousands of ft in the air…

Is there a right time to switch seats? Why don’t airlines want you to compare prices? What should you do if your flight is canceled? What if you lost your luggage? And what if your flight is overbooked?

We’ve got the answers to these questions and more as well as we reveal some little dirty secrets that airlines don’t want to tell you.

#1 – What a Safety Demo Doesn’t Tell You

Have you ever wondered why cabin lights are dimmed at night? It’s to adjust the fliers’ eyes to the dark so they can easily find a way out when necessary. Also, the tray tables are put up at landing and takeoff to allow other passengers to leave if they need to.

No one will tell you to keep your window shade open but you should do so because, in the unfortunate case of a crash, you want to help firefighters see what’s going on inside. And keep the air vent over your seat turned on to eliminate airborne germs.

#2 – Airlines are Quite Stingy when it
comes to Fuel

Fuel is heavy therefore costly to carry, so keeping its levels as low as possible saves airlines plenty of cash. However, this can only mean that in case of an unpredictable delay or harsh weather, there would be an emergency landing because there’s almost no more fuel left.

#3 – Is Your Flight Overbooked?

Airlines don’t tell you to refuse the offered 200 dollars voucher, well, just don’t! They generally continue to boost the offer until they get the needed number of individuals who are willing to give up their seats.

But in case they don’t have enough participants and have no other choice but to kick you off (involuntarily), then you should insist on getting compensation in cash! In fact, many airlines will write you a check.

According to the Department of Transportation, you are entitled to up to 1,300 dollars in cash, depending on the length of your delay and price of your flight ticket.

#4 – When Booking a Group Trip…

You should search for 1 ticket at a time because when you search for more tickets, for instance, 4 tickets, and the airline has just 3 at the lowest fare, then all of the 4 tickets are bounced to a higher price range.

Now you can book your group trips better and enjoy exploring the world at a lower price. Remember, one ticket at a time.

#5 – Lost Your Luggage? What Now?

As soon as you realize that your luggage is lost, you need to report it, even if there are long lines ahead.

Actually, most airlines require filing a report within a short period of time, meaning that in case you miss the deadline, your claim might not be accepted.

#6 – Sanitize Everything

Once you get on the plane, get your sanitizing wipes ready! Start with wiping down your seat and sanitize every other thing before you touch it, especially tray tables, armrests, window blinds, seat belts, seat pockets, and entertainment screens or magazines.

Also, make sure to sanitize your hands before eating and avoid touching your eyes and mouth. The vast majority of airlines don’t clean anything between flights and you sure don’t want to eat on a tray table on which the ex-passengers changed their baby’s diaper!

#7 – Is Your Flight canceled?

Well, you should obviously get in line at the gate counter or the ticket desk, but more importantly, make a phone call as well.

Making a simple phone call can connect you with an airline phone agent before you move on the line to reach the exhausted agent behind the desk.

Also, you may want to do your quick research in advance to find out the least and most delayed airlines.

#8 – Airlines Don’t Appreciate Price-comparison Websites

Airlines don’t like those websites simply because they have to pay a fee each time you book your flight ticket using price-comparison online sites, such as Orbitz and TripAdvisor, therefore they’re making it difficult for you to use them.

On the other hand, certain airlines, like Southwest and Delta, take the easy way and never reveal airfares to some websites.

#9 – What’s the Right Time to Switch Seats?

To switch seats, you should do it at the right time, which is 100 hours (nearly 4 days) before your flight. Checking the seat map at this time is perfect because that’s when airlines start upgrading passengers from coach to business, which opens up some of the best seats.
Never worry about getting the seat you don’t want again.

#10 – Airplanes are Totally Disgusted when You Do this…

The staff will probably never tell how disgusted they are when they see you walking around on the plane barefoot! Why? Well, you see that carpet! It contains a wide variety of gross things that’s been spilled on it.

Of course, you don’t see any of it and decide to comfortably walk on the carpet barefoot. Never do it again! You sure don’t want to be walking on baby pee, milk, vomit, blood, and more.
